Former Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke claims that the inclusion of RMB into the special drawing rights (SDR) basket is merely of symbolic significance. Save and except for internal accounting within the IMF, in practice, the SDR has very limited use. ANBOUND's chief researcher, Chen Gong, however, is of the view that in general, the public’s attention is mostly on the commentaries on the inclusion of RMB into the SDR basket, this, however, does not mean that China could just sit there and wait for luck to come. Rather, the key depends on how China makes use of RMB’s status following its inclusion into the SDR basket. Ben Bernanke points out the inclusion in SDR basket has only symbolic meaning to China, such view, however, is made from the perspective of the United States. The decisive thing with real significance for China is how to truly make use of the SDR standard.
